Dual-Function PV Glass Coating and Solar Control Glass for Global Buyers

Hot glass and dirty glass are two of the most persistent cost drivers in solar power and modern architecture. PV plants lose output when dust, bird droppings, salt spray and industrial pollution settle on module covers. Curtain walls and vehicle glazing gain heat when near-infrared radiation passes through unchecked. Yucheng Special Glass Co., Ltd. addresses both problems with a practical coating platform: a dual-function anti-reflective and hydrophobic self-cleaning coating for PV glass, a field-applied retrofit coating for operating solar plants, and an oxide-based solar-control coating for architectural and automotive glass.

One Coating, Two Functions for PV Glass

The global PV module market already requires an anti-reflective layer on module cover glass. According to company materials, uncoated rolled PV glass typically transmits about 91.5% of light; after anti-reflective coating, transmission rises to 93%–93.5%. Each 1% gain in light transmission can contribute roughly 0.5%–1% to power generation. Yucheng’s PV coating is designed as a two-in-one liquid: it delivers the required anti-reflective performance while adding long-lasting hydrophobic self-cleaning function.

The coating is reported to achieve a hydrophobic angle above 120° and film hardness above 5.5H. It can be applied directly at PV glass production plants, so it does not need to consume the capacity of Yucheng’s existing Qinhuangdao flat-glass roller coating line. With more than 1,200 PV glass production lines in China available for toll manufacturing, the company sees a fast route to scalable market supply.

Technical positioning matters here. Photocatalytic hydrophilic coatings need water and sunlight to break down organic dirt, suit only a limited range of conditions, and can involve a trade-off between catalytic activity and anti-reflective performance. Yucheng has focused its development on a super-hydrophobic coating liquid that preserves anti-reflective function while adding durable self-cleaning behavior. The company reports that cooperation with Risen Energy using its ARF coating technology has entered small-batch production.

Retrofit Coatings for Operating Solar Plants

Existing PV plants face a different problem. Chemical pollution, cement dust, oily metal dust, heavy rust, bird droppings and salt spray reduce generation and can shorten module life, especially where cleaning is difficult or expensive. In high-labor-cost markets, regular washing may be impractical; cleaning robots are costly and mainly address certain dust types. Yucheng’s post-coating service supplies a self-cleaning coating liquid for manual on-site application, creating a retrofit route for operating assets.

The supplied project summary table covers eight post-coating installations from August 2025 through May 2026. Pollution sources include light floating ash and bird droppings, oily metal dust, heavy rust, aluminum powder, iron and coal dust, and cement ash. At sites with reported generation comparisons, gains range from 7.33% to 11.97%. Other entries are noted as small-area tests with visible reductions in contamination or with feedback still pending. The company’s project economics model indicates that added generation value can cover application costs within about 18 months, after which owners can benefit from lower cleaning requirements and extended module life.

Importantly, the company states that its coating can serve both new and existing plants. Some resin-based alternatives require hydrofluoric acid treatment that damages the original anti-reflective layer, which limits them to older projects. Yucheng positions its solution as compatible with any new or existing solar project.

Solar Control and Thermal Insulation for Buildings and Vehicles

The second supplied image compares single-glazing options. A 5 mm white glass sample shows 13% UV blocking, 87% visible light transmission, 16% short-wave IR blocking, 17% long-wave IR blocking and SHGC 0.87. A 5 mm silver-free LOW-E D50 sample shows 35% UV, 66% visible light, 62% short-wave IR blocking, 70% long-wave IR blocking and SHGC 0.53. A 5 mm F-green tinted glass shows 36% UV, 81% visible light, 65% short-wave IR blocking, 58% long-wave IR blocking and SHGC 0.63.

The Yucheng 3 mm white glass single-side coated Sun Shield Type 1 sample shows 77% UV blocking, 60% visible light transmission, 99% short-wave IR blocking at 780–1400 nm, 100% long-wave IR blocking at 1400–2500 nm and SHGC 0.32. The chart describes superior solar control and thermal insulation with visible light transmission adjustable from 60% to 85%. Because the coating is an oxide film, the company states that its performance does not degrade as long as the base glass remains intact.

The product can be used as single glazing or combined with laminated and insulating glass. It suits new curtain-wall projects and retrofit work. Self-cleaning coating can also be added to architectural and automotive glass, creating combined solar-control and self-cleaning benefits.

Manufacturing Depth and Global Expansion

Yucheng Special Glass controls core coating-liquid formulation technology and also designs and builds coating production lines. A flat-glass roller coating line is already in operation, and a dip coating line is under construction. The company plans further production sites in other Chinese provinces and overseas to reduce logistics and tariff costs, increase capacity and support international distributors. Technology reserves include automotive glass solar control, hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings, antibacterial coatings, AG 4A coating and JG application technology.

Industry Insight

The market is moving toward combined performance rather than single-function glass. At a 2026 Shanghai PV exhibition, JinkoSolar and JA Solar introduced self-cleaning PV modules with a reported premium of about RMB 0.04 per watt, roughly 5% of module price. This supports the case for coatings that deliver more than anti-reflection alone. For building glass, buyers increasingly need high IR blocking without sacrificing light control, plus long service life and lower maintenance.
